One in Five people in the United Kingdom suffer from depression - In 2008, there were 5,706 suicides in the United Kingdom. The number increased from 5,377 in 2007. Despite a peak in 1998, the trend in suicide rates has been generally downwards since 1991. There are more suicides in males than females. In 2008, there were 17.7 suicides per 100,000 population in men and 5.4 per 100,000 in women.
