National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) or Call 1-800-SUICIDE

In 2007, suicide was the eleventh leading cause of death for all age groups, and more than 34,000 suicides occurred in the U.S. This is the equivalent of 91 suicides per day; one suicide every 15 minutes or 10.95 suicides per 100,000. In 2007, 14.5% of U.S. high school students reported that they had seriously considered attempting suicide during the 12 months preceding the survey; 6.9% of students reported that they had actually attempted suicide one or more times during the same period.

1 in 65,000 children ages 10 to 14 commit suicide each year. For young people 15-24 years old, suicide is the third leading cause of death. Between 1952 and 1995, suicide in young adults nearly tripled. Over half of all suicides occur in adult men, ages 25-65. Many who attempt suicide never seek professional care. There are more suicides globally than deaths from war and violence combined.

An estimated 1 million people worldwide complete suicide every year, which is approximately one person every 40 seconds. Less than half of adults with serious mental illness received treatment or counseling in the past year.

These facts are startling! Ninety percent of all people who die by suicide have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death. Please visit the websites below for more information and help.
