Since its construction in 1937 approximately 1300 people have leaped to their death off of this famous San Francisco landmark. On February 12, 2010, the GGBHTD Board of Directors voted unanimously for the Golden Gate Bridge to have a Net System. In 2009 31 cases of suicide were reported. There have been a few survivors over the years, but most who jump are either crushed by the 75 mph violent impact, drown in the chilly waters with their body disseminated and/or die of hypothermia. According to the National Mental Institute of Health an estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older—about one in four adults—suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. The World Health Organization reports that four of the 10 leading causes of disability in the US and other developed countries are mental disorders.
By 2020, Major Depressive illness will be the leading cause of disability in the world for women and children.
It is time to unveil the stigma! Depression and related mental ailments can be treated effectively.
